چکیده

From almost every respect, the lowest-order dilatational waves in thin plates and rods are very similar. Therefore, it is rather intriguing that fluid loading increases the phase velocity of such waves in a plate, but decreases it in a rod. Although this difference can be easily demonstrated by inspection of the well-known exact dispersion equations, the underlying physics remains somewhat obscure. Simple physical models are introduced for thin immersed rods and plates that provide a better insight into the fundamental difference causing the opposite behavior of these otherwise analogous modes of wave propagation. It is shown that the inverse effect of fluid loading is caused by the fact that the radiation impedance exerted by the fluid on plates is purely real while it is dominantly imaginary in the case of thin rods. © 1997 Acoustical Society of America. @S0001-4966~97!01212-5#

Experimental verification of the opposite effect of fluid loading on the velocity of dilatational waves in thin plates and rods

In a recent paper @J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 102, 3478 ~1997!#, it was demonstrated by analytical means that radiation loading increases the velocity of dilatational waves in immersed thin plates, but decreases it in thin rods. The main goal of this paper is to verify experimentally the predicted opposite effect, which is particularly interesting because in almost every respect, the lowest-order dila...

Buckling Analysis of Thin Functionally Graded Rectangular Plates with two Opposite Edges Simply Supported

In this article, an exact analytical solution for thermal buckling analysis of thin functionallygraded (FG) rectangular plates is presented. Based on the classical plate theory and using the principle ofminimum total potential energy, the stability equations are obtained. Since the material properties in FGmaterials are functions of the coordinates (specially the thickness), the stability equat...

Effect of Initial Stress on Propagation of Love Waves in an Anisotropic Porous Layer

In the present paper, effect of initial stresses on the propagation of Love waves has been investigated in a fluid saturated, anisotropic, porous layer lying in welded contact over a prestressed, non-homogeneous elastic half space. The dispersion equation of phase velocity has been derived. It has been found that the phase velocity of Love waves is considerably influenced by porosity and anisot...

Rigidity and Irregularity Effect on Surface Wave Propagation in a Fluid Saturated Porous Layer

The propagation of surface waves in a fluid- saturated porous isotropic layer over a semi-infinite homogeneous elastic medium with an irregularity for free and rigid interfaces have been studied. The rectangular irregularity has been taken in the half-space. The dispersion equation for Love waves is derived by simple mathematical techniques followed by Fourier transformations.  It can be seen t...

Transference of SH-Waves in Fluid Saturated Porous Medium Sandwiched Between Heterogeneous Half-Spaces

A mathematical model is considered to investigate the behavior of horizontally polarized shear waves (SH-waves) in fluid saturated porous medium sandwiched between heterogeneous half-spaces. Heterogeneity in the upper half-space is due to linear variation of elastic parameters, whereas quadratic variation has been considered for lower half-space. The method of separation of variables and Whitta...
